Navigation
The National Navigation Award Scheme NNAS, bronze and silver awards.
The bronze award covers basic navigation techniques and understanding of maps and the ways we can use them.
You will be able to plan and execute a walk of 3-5km safely in safe and suitable environment.
The silver award takes the bronze skills and moves them up a level. The walks are longer, 5-8km, and more remote.
We will also cover and practice skills to deal with poor visibility and relocation skills, finding yourself if you do get lost.
An increased level of accuracy is required for the silver award.
Paddle sport
Scottish Canoe Association (SCA) Paddle sport start, 1,2 and 3 Star awards. These are personal performance awards.Paddle sport start- this entry level awards showing an experience of either a kayak or canoe and the elementary skills to paddle it.
1 Star this is the first level of personal performance. For this award the paddler must have a good basic knowledge of paddle sport and show an ability to make the boats go where they want. (link to download the syllabus)
2 Star shows a good level of general paddle sport knowledge, can demonstrate advanced paddle strokes and has a higher more polished performance of strokes. The candidate must also demonstrate ability in other craft and evidence of journeys or competitions in the sport. (link to download the syllabus)
3 Star is an introduction to moving water and the paddler needs to be a competent member of a group on grade 2 water. The course will cover knowledge of river features, river running strategies and safety on the water. (link to download the syllabus)
